Hanka Paldum (born 28 April 1956) is a Bosnian folk singer. She is most known for her sevdalinka work and her record label Sarajevo Disk. Her music is still widely known in ex-Yugoslavia and modern day Bosnia.

Early life

Hanka Paldum was born on 28 April 1956 in Čajnice, SFR Yugoslavia (present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Career

Hanka Paldum released her debut album Voljela sam oči nevjerne on February 13th 1974, When she was only 17 years old.

During the breakup of Yugoslavia, and particularly the Bosnian war, she spent her time living in Sarajevo,[1] from where she still wrote music. In pre-war 1992 she would be openly anti-war and create a song called "Bosna je majka moja", in which she advocated for peace and unity between all ethnicities in Bosnia. When the war began, she would co-write and be featured in the music video for the war song "Patriotska liga", an anthem for a Bosnian paramilitary unit. In wartime 1992 she released the album Uzalud behari mirišu under the Embex label, which would not feature any patriotic material. During the course of the war she would write war songs and perform these to soldiers on numerous occasions, like at ceremonial oaths for brigades.[2] Later in the war she would also release a patriotic album called Sarajevo heroj grad, also under the Embex label. Its exact release date is not known, but can safely be pinned down to either 1993 or 1994. It is assumed to be her first and only war album. However it is possible that there is undiscovered Hanka Paldum discography, as a cover of the Nazif Gljiva song "Izdajice, gdje ste sada" surfaced with studio quality, but can not be linked to any known release.
