108. ide dalje (lit. The 108th goes forward) is a song written and sang by singer-songwriter Zvonimir Ćosić - Ćosa from Slavonski Brod. The song was released in June 1992 and is dedicated to the 108th brigade from Slavonski Brod. It achieved great popularity locally and the title became the slogan of the brigade.
Background
Ćosa was a well known singer in various local rock bands from Slavonski Brod in the 80s and early 90s. At the start of the war he joined the 108th brigade as a volunteer. He dedicated his time, when he was not on the battlefield, to music.
The song was directly inspired by the tragedy that occurred during the heavy bombings of the town. On the 3rd of May 1992, one of the hardest days for Brod, in the settlement of Jelas, an airplane bomb fell on the house of the Marinković family, killing 5 children that were hiding inside the basement of the home.[1]
After the tragedy, Ćosa wrote a song dedicated to the 108th Brigade, in order to boost morale in those though times.
Release
In June 1992, Ćosa gathered his friends Antun Lović - Toni (guitar), Alen Ruško (keyboard) and Mirko Šenkovski - Kosta (backing vocals) in Brod's wartime TV studio, from where HRT reported the bombing of Slavonski Brod. The song was recorded in wartime conditions, with improvised equipment. On the same day the TV technicians presented there a video for the song, consisting of edited war footage from the area of Brod and in the evening it was broadcasted for the first time during the news on HRT and parts of it on the program Slikom na sliku.[2]
Popularity
The song achieved great popularity locally and the name became the slogan of the brigade. A documentary entitled 108. ide dalje was made during the 90s, which contained the song at the end. In 2011, Adolf Škrpan, on behalf of the the Association of the 108th Brigade, organized a cycling tournament entitled 108. ide dalje, which takes place every year on the 28th of June, the day of the founding of the brigade.[3]
As for the song itself, it would be released on the tape entitled Mom Brodu, which was released in late 1992 and it contained songs from local singers from Slavonski Brod. On the same tape Ćosa had another song entitled Nebeska Kraljice and another where he was vocalist for the group Trag Vječnosti named Stazama Garde.
Lyrics
The lyrics were written by Ćosa.
Kada mrak proguta dan
I kada krv natopi dječiji san
I kada nema riječi utjehe
108. ide dalje
Kada jutro izgubi sjaj
Kad pomisliš da svemu je kraj
I kada utihnu nade sve
108. ide dalje
Za svaku noć neprospavanu
Za svaku suzu isplakanu
Za moj i tvoj dom
108. ide dalje
Za svaku mladost zaustavljenu
Za svaku želju neostvarenu
Za moj i tvoj dom
108. ide dalje
