The song tells the story of a mother mourning the loss of her son who was killed by the Ustaša and thrown into the Drina.
The song is an adapted version of the song, "Na obali Drine". Originally written by Rade Jovanović and composed by Zaim Imamović, the song was initially released on a single in 1960. Performed by Mile Petrović and Zaim Imamović, it was originally about a Partisan mother mourning the loss of her son who was killed and thrown in the Drina. This reworked changes the mom from being Partisan to Serbian. This version explicitly states that the son was shot and killed by Ustaša forces and was thrown into the river. The song is also about two minutes longer.

Lyrics

Lyrics:

Na obali reke, jednog mutnog dana,
Srbinova majka stoji uplakana
gleda mutne vale i proliva suze
pita hladnu reku što joj sina uze

Sećaš li se, Drino, na godinu ratnu
kad pogibe junak, za slobodu zlatnu
ustaške mu puške srce razniješe
a tvoji ga, reko, vali odniješe

Huči mutna reka, viju se oblaci,
majka stručak ruža u valove baci
nosi mutna reko, ružu utrganu
pa zakiti sinu grobnicu neznanu

Reko, mutna reko, mutna razlivena
ti si mome sinu grobnica ledena
kaži meni, kaži gde mi čedo spava
gde mi skrivaš, reko, sina Milovana
