"Nema Saše oj Jovane sedi" (Serbian Cyrillic: "Нема Саше ој Јоване седи", lit. "Saša is No More, Oh Gray Jovan") is a song written and performed by Željko Samardžić Panonac.

Music and lyrics

The song opens up with a poem with the accompaniment of a Gusle. This segment establishes the character "Jovo", an old Serb who has survived war and ends with the mention of his grandson Saša going to war. The song brings the revelation that Saša and many other Serbs died fighting, with his family grieving their loss.

Lyrics

Lyrics:

Đede Jovo, ti Srbine stari
Šta te snađe u starine dane?
Nož komšija u srce ti zari
Prađedovske ozledi ti rane
Kokarda ti opet na Šubari
Đede Jovo, ti Srbine stari

Ti si, Jovo, poreklom od Tića
Od Đačića, okolo Nikšića
A glava si ponosnih Tešića
Iz Tikvarića, pored Milića

Tebe život milovao nije
Beše radost a i tuga pusta
Nikada se požalio nisi
A osmoro ti odhrani usta

Rodila je tvoja ćerka Rada
Sina Sašu srpskog borca mlada
Krenuo je retke brade Saša
Zemlju svoju branit od ustaša

Jovo, brate, evo crnih mrana
Zar nemaju nikog osim nas
Evo opet idu sa svih strana
Tebi jovo nose crni glas

Dok te gledam srce mi se ledi
Oj dušmane ubio vas Bog
Nema Saše oj Jovane sedi
Krajišnika i unuka tvog

Srpske muke, oko Banja luke
Uvek bilo mnogo to se zna
Plači jovo drhtave ti ruke
Plače nebo, plače Krajina

Plače Rada, plače otac Boro
Tuga im je dugo kako grob
Zar si sine poginuti moro?
Oj dušmani ubio vas Bog

Lyrics (English):

Grandfather Jovo, you old Serb
What finds you in your old days?
A knife your neighbour stabs in your heart
Great-grandfathers wounds hurt you
A cockade is again on your Šubara
Grandfather Jovo, you old Serb

You, Jovo, are a descendant of Tića
Of Đačić around Nikšić
And you are the head of the proud Tešićs
Out of Tikravić by Milić

Life was not easy on you
There was joy, and there was sole sorrow
Yet you never complained
Having to feed eight mouths

Your daughter Rada birthed a son, Saša
A young Serb fighter
Saša's sparse beard set off
to defend his land from Ustaše

Jovo, brother, here are the black crows
Like they don't have anyone other than us
They again come from all sides
Bringing bad news to you, Jovo

As I watch you, my heart freezes
Oh enemies, may God kill you!
Saša is no more, oh grey-haired Jovan
The Krajišnik and grandson of yours

Serbian suffering around Banja Luka
It was always known there was a lot of it
Jovo is crying, his hands are shaking
Heaven is crying, Krajina is crying

Rada is cyring, father Boro is crying
Their sorrow is as long as a grave
Did you, son, have to die?
Oh enemies, may God kill you!
