"Diler" (Serbian Cyrillic: "Дилер", lit. "Dealer") is a song written and performed by prominent Serb war singer Baja Mali Knindža.

Music and lyrics

At the start of the war, sanctions would be imposed on Yugoslavia, destabilizing the Dinar and causing record hyperinflation within the economy. Yugoslavs resorted to using more stable currencies with the most common ones being the German Mark and the US Dollar. Due to the instability of the local currency, the conversion rates were consequently also rendered unstable. Black market currency dealers would attempt to mitigate this by setting their own rates usually lower than market price. This would not be the first instance of lack market currency exchange within the country as this phenomenon has been documented since the 1970's, however with the economy reaching peak instability during the wartime period, their involvement was bigger than previous periods.

The song reflects the situation at the time as Baja has less German Marks with each day he interacts with the dealer. Baja also mentions an old friend who does the exchanges with him which may be based on a real person, though no official sources have substantiated this claim.

Lyrics

Lyrics:

Sreo sam ga, sreo sam ga u ulici francuskoj
počeo da diluje stari drugar moj

Pošto danas ide, hajde, reci mi
imam 20 maraka, daj, promeni mi

Na sve strane, na sve strane udarila kriza
a džepovi njegovi prepuni deviza

Pošto danas ide, hajde, reci mi
imam 10 maraka, daj, promeni mi

U školu je, u školu je sa mnom išao
nije me ni poznao kad sam prišao

Pošto danas ide, hajde, reci mi
imam 5 maraka, daj, promeni mi

Pošto danas ide ne govori mi
nema više dilera, daj pozajmi
